camera? November 25, 2004
i want to buy an affordable small video camera that also takes good stills. it needs to do well with distance & action shots, but will rarely be used in low light situations.
i don’t really care what format it records in as long as I can also use a firewire to transfer the pix and video directly to my computer.
I welcome any and all suggestions because i’m pretty overwhelmed with all the options. so let me know if you have a video camera that you like.

Hey Katie, just read your article featured in breastfeeding.com. As a new blogger & new parent, thanks for the info; I am using it as part of my research on the breast v. bottle debate.

Try “Consumer Reports.” The last time I used them (years ago) their critiques were excellent. They take you from zero to sixty in an instant. You’ll learn what issues surround the item, things you wouldn’t think of. Gets you right in the ballpark.

26 Saudi scholars addressed a message to the Iraqi people in which the scholars call upon them to unite, resist the occupation, and stop internal fighting.
The message was posted to the IslamToday.net website of Salman Al-Awda, a well-known cleric who was jailed in Saudi Arabia in the past for his radical rhetoric.

Katie,
Tonight is the first time I have seen your blog. Unfortunately I have no advice for you about video camera, but I read the comment you made on my friend Chris’ blog and I was impressed enough by your words to come and visit your site. You have a great blog! As far as I have been able to read you have a lot of great info for parents. I should read you more frequently.
As a native Tennessean and currently a close neighbor (Alabama) I just wanted to say hey!

Howdy Katie! I happen to be a North Knoxvillian myself, and found you via a story on WBIR.com…
But I happen to be an expert of sorts on videocameras. Film school, 1st mac with FireWire, I’m an early adopter geek, you get the picture.
OK, you want good stills AND great video (except in low light)?
Some questions–
1. how much video do you need to take at one time?
2. do you have a megapixel range?
3. would USB suffice for photo (only) transfer?
Now, the guess-o-rometer suggests these. Well, that and my so-called “expertise.” Let me preface this by saying I do NOT work for Canon. But for some reason I chose Canon’s across the board. I’ve owned the XL1 and several PowerShot models. Canon’s have their quirks though. Obviously you’ll want to check epinions and Amazon rankings, but my experience has been positive overall.
“Money is no object”
Canon Optura Xi Digital Video Cam (about $1200)
This is a high-end videocamera that takes stills too. In fact, it can write them to a memory card AS you videotape… I’ve used it, it’s cool. Unfortunately, doing it that fast makes for low-res pics. So that’s the tradeoff. You’re just as well in that regard to do this:
“Low-end”
Canon PowerShot A95 (about $300)
This is actually a still camera, but with a large enough memory card (which will run about another ($100-200) it will take a surprising amount of video.
But who really wants to do that? Chances are, ANY digital still takes poopy video.
“Mid-Range” The “value camera” is the all-around champ. Try the Elura 80 camcorder.

Or get a Sony. Those are good too!
