leggings, redux March 30, 2006
Well, according to those fashion forward folks in Fort Wayne (I do loves me some good alliteration), LEGGINGS ARE BACK this year.
I am actually really happy to hear this. Leggings are one 80s trend I wanted to return (unlike the incerdibly offensive gauchos everyone is sporting at the moment). Back in the day, I loved wearing my fave black, Danskin leggings with miniskirts and my Converse high tops. When I felt all granola, I’d wear ‘em under my baggy Laura Ashley jumpers with my clogs. Either way, they were uber comfy and I thought, quite cute.
And now they are “back.”
I think I still have a few pairs, so I’m going to dig them out this week and give them a test-wear.
gauchos? I wore gauchos when I was in jr. high. I don’t think they’re back “in” on the west coast, though I don’t pay much attention to fashion. But leggings–I don’t think they ever really went out here.
Gauchos are big here in Appalachia these days. And yo all know that we set the trends.
I loved leggings, too, and still have a pair. Just goes to show, everything comes back around. I wish I’d kept some of my platform shoes from the ’70s, as they’re big again as well.
I agree that Gauchos are hideous. It is a cruel joke on women that this type of pants is manufactured.
Why do these weird wide legged pants end by the knee somewhere? They keep on coming back because gay male designers misguidedly think women actually liked this style two decades before and rehash all old styles!
I also adored how comfortable legging was. However, I think some fashion trends are best left to a new generation who never wore them in the first time. It is never the same the second time around.
I hate all the new handbags this season. All the bags look like Paris Hilton would wear it and I cannot find a new decent bag. I still cannot get over that suddenly all handbags in the stores are huge with loose strappy fringe things hanging everywhere with so much ornamentation, they’re also so heavy it feels like your carrying around a dog bag.
Give me my faux Birken Bag any day

I still wear my Converse all the time but now I favor the low tops.
I read fugly and usually agree with everything, but all winter I actually thought they were wrong about not liking the way leggings look on some gals. I love the way Gwen Stephani(sp?) wears her leggings. It is certainly an inappropriate look with a formal dress, but they pick on the all the young actresses and singers who are wearing them in a casual way with a mini jean skirt and flats or sneakers.
I think that is a very cute practical way to wear very short flirty skirts for young women.

I wanted to add a note about Laura Ashley; I used to be a Laura Ashley junkie!
I had a serious addiction, when I got married in the early 1980’s I decorated my apartment everything Laura Ashley like a psycho English cottage and wore all her clothes. What did I see in that squished flat chest look? I do not know how my husband tolerated living with all those flower prints on me and in the house. He said he liked the feeling of living in a girl’s bedroom! I was seriously in trouble I went from being a hippie to a new waver punk to someone who lost their mind in a Laura Ashley haze. I was so obsessed that when traveling in England in 1983 all I did was go to Laura Ashley shops, bought up her clothes, and had them ship home tons of crap.

I am so glad the trend of wearing tights and leggings is back. I think they look good and I like how they feel as well.
