I don’t want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that.

I only recently decided I really HAD to have a cell phone. I had had one here and there, off and on for the past few years, but I kept losing them and not replacing them for 6 months. I’ve always hated the idea of anyone being able to reach me at any time (and am rather famous for being unreachable by phone).

But as my life gets busier, and my two older kids now have cell phones, it has become clear that I have to have one and actually hang on to it. So I got one and have made the commitment to keep it. Jon and I even decided to get rid of the landline. We are now an all-cell family.

And now I’ve discovered what the rest of the U.S. figured out in about 2002: texting via cell phone is a great way to communicate. I’d seen J. and H. doing it with their friends all the time, but it looked like a pointless, teenagey thing. Why not e-mail? Or call the person? I’d sent a few texts before, but really didn’t see the appeal.

But then the kids started texting me, and I realized that sometimes you don’t need to go thru the hassle of an entire phone call. And sometimes you are at school (kids) or in a mtg(me) or maybe in a movie or at a restaurant or something, and need to tell someone something, but can’t talk on the phone.

So now I text the kids all the time. It’s a great way to keep up with them. I am still rather slow in typing the texts…and I pretty much refuse to write in “txtspk” - I insist on typing out entire words - but I may even succumb to that.

Welcome to the darkside! I too still type out the words though… purist in me I guess. Oh, except for CYA… picked that up from my 16 yr. old. It is so much easier though, I’ve converted after all these years too! BTW gonna take a guess that BabyC isn’t sleeping bcz of the posting.

I recently determined the world of texting as well. I got an EnV because it has a small traditional keyboard on it and bought an unlimited text package.
It’s also built like a tank, which is good for me as I’m a bull in a china shop.

Your kids can text from school? Mine can’t use the phone except after hours and/or off property.

Yes, you have now discovered what I tell folks about texting. Your experience matches mine exactly. I can text quick at work to say hi, text someone quickly when I’m not where I can make a phone call, and my ultimate geek favorite, make fun of my mom to my sisters while we’re all in the room. ;-) Of course, I’m sure they are all making fun of me.

And you will get faster texting. Use the predictive text function if you’re not already. However, the words home and good are the same number combination. :-)

I’m not a big fan of texting. One is for practical reasons; typing it out seems to take so much more time than a call. Plus, I hate the inane nature of the content of many text messages — i.e., “Am on way home.” Yes, much of the content in voice is simple, too, but there’s always the lovely subtext, and response to that subtext, that comes with a voice to voice communication.

You’ve been tagged. Sorry to do this to you, but I look forward to reading your 8 interesting things. You’re suppose to write 8 random things about yourself, and then ask 8 other bloggers to do the same. :o)

Students text at school (sneaky little buggers) way too much IMO. When there was a fight news of it would be across the school in a millisecond.

I find my college freshman do this way too much and it interferes with their grades (one girl sits and texts the entire lecture most days–which is against college policy—and she thinks she is really sneaky. The other day she couldn’t believe she was doing so poorly since she told me “I am here every day!”

I find texting to be a bit annoying because of this but I am not going to slam it since that always comes back to bite me when I ‘discover’ things much later than most ;)

If you use the T9 option, and the wrong word comes up, like home and good, you can press 0 and it will give you the next word with that combination~!
