Some bloggers deploy their thesaurus (thesauri?) as sloppy weapons of silliness.

I’m all for using the simpler word first. Writing is generally prettier that way.

Reminds me of Orwell’s “Politics and the English Language,” still the best essay on writing I’ve ever read, where he recommends never using a two-syllable word when a one-syllable word will work just as well.
