I don’t want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don’t want to do that.

We accidentally lucked out June 10, 2008

Note to potential burglars reading my blog: we will have a male housesitter staying full time in our house while we are on vacation. We have an alarm system. And neighbors will be watching the house as well.

Anywaaaaay - so we are heading out on vacation later this week, and we just got some photos of the house we are renting.

And it is sweet beyond belief.

We originally rented another very nice house - big enough for the six adults and 11 children who will be sharing it. It was on the beach, and perfectly pleasant in every way. But a few weeks ago, the realty company handling the rental called to say that the renovations on that house would not be complete by the time we were slated to stay there.

So a mad scramble began to try to find us another place to stay at the last minute. Jon’s parents had already rented their house on the same island, so that’s definitely where we needed to go. But finding a big enough house, actually ON the beach for that many people on such short notice was not going well. At one point, it looked like some of us would stay in one house, while Jon and the children and I would stay in a house described as “rustic” a few blocks away. This was not an appealing option. I didn’t want to blow my entire vacation budget for the year to be stuck in a small, “rustic” house blocks away from everyone else.

A flurry of calls were made to the realtor. Pressure was applied. Finally, she called and said she had convinced some friends with what she described as “one of the nicest houses on the island” to rent it to us for the same price as the other house. She said the house doesn’t normally rent at all - it’s actually for sale - but that her friends were going to let us have it for the week to help us out.

I was happy we would all be able to stay together after all, but was skeptical about this “nicest house on the island” thing. I figured she had just said that to get us off her back.

So this week, we got the address of the house. I googled it and discovered that “nice” does not begin to describe this house. It’s currently for sale for just under $3 million. ANd yesterday, the realtor sent photos.

Take a look. We lucked out. We never could have afforded this house - even if it HAD been available for rent. I believe a good time will be had by all :-)

Fantastic! The room alone is amazing, as is the lovely decor. But….make sure everyine takes extra, extra care to keep everything in pristine condition. There are few fussier people than homesellers!

I know. I am totally nervous about the decor getting messed up. We’re going to make sure all breakable knick-nacks are put away in a closet or something for the whole time we are there…

Sweet!! That IS a nice house! Is this down on the far end of the island, ie, away from the Pig?

Betsy Says:

Yep. other end from the pig. Betsy

I think you have room in that house for me too! Hey make sure you pick up some “I’m big on the pig” shirts for your family. It’s time little C-bug and cousin N. get one too! I love those shirts!

Oh gosh it’s gorgeous.

Two thoughts: 1.) Does it have an outdoor shower or hose? Sand is brutal! And heard to get off with sunscreen. 2.) Careful about drinking red wine in the dining room. Or spilling anything that might stain that rug. If you spill any red wine, cover the spot with salt. (Not sand!)

Have the best time!

Carefully roll up the rugs and then put them back right before you leave.

I probably wouldn’t allow the kids to eat any snacks inside the house (or ever eat in their bedroom’s) because the last thing I would want to do is worry about cleaning while I’m on vacation! Hopefully, you’ll have great, sunny weather and the children will want to be outside most of the time. You’re such a hard worker and and devoted Mom - I hope you get the stress-free vacation that you deserve. P.S.Ban all marker’s and paint from the house! LOL!

I will never know why people build such nice houses on the beach. It’s such a harsh environment.

I grew up near Pawleys Island and still remember how amazed we were to hear that someone had AIR-CONDITIONED a beach house. It seemed so wussy.
